Nutrition & Living: Healthy Eating That Actually Lasts

For adults with intellectual and developmental differences, food is more than fuel—it's confidence, independence, and connection.

Yet too often the only options are one-size-fits-all diets that ignore the person in front of them. At First Coast Ability & Wellness Center, our Nutrition & Living programming builds real, lasting habits through a research- and data-based approach tailored to each individual across Northeast Florida.

Why sustainable nutrition matters

Many adults with IDD leave school-based services and lose access to the health and recreation support they once had.

From there, the path often leads to the latest fad diet—something that might work for a few weeks before old habits return, because there was never any accountability or any plan built around the individual. We reject the myth that people with IDD don't care about their health. They care deeply. What they've been missing is a program designed with them, for them—one that treats the mind and body together.

Our nutrition seminars break down healthy eating into plain, approachable ideas—no jargon, no pressure, no fad promises.

Sessions are designed for adults with intellectual and developmental differences and welcome the caregivers who support them, so the whole circle learns together.

Plain-language learning

We teach nutrition in clear, everyday words—what foods do for your body and how small choices add up—so every participant feels capable and included.

Built for caregivers too

Parents, families, and caregivers are welcome to join, so the healthy habits learned in seminars carry over into daily life at home.

Grounded in research

Every session reflects the latest research and trends, adapted thoughtfully for the IDD community rather than borrowed from generic diet advice.

Meal planning support for IDD adults in Jacksonville

Good nutrition falls apart when the plan ignores real preferences, routines, and abilities.

Our meal planning support is individualized—built around what each person likes, needs, and can realistically sustain. Instead of a rigid diet handed down from a chart, participants help shape choices they can feel good about and keep, which is exactly how lasting change takes hold.
